Visit a re-created 18th century Native American village
Put down your phone and step into history as you enter Oconaluftee Indian Village on the Cherokee reservation in western North Carolina. The re-created, working village will show you what Cherokee life and struggles were like in the 1760s as Europeans settled on Indian land. Explore the winding paths to homes, work areas and ritual sites. Observe cultural dances and reenactments of the village preparing for war. Meet historical Cherokee people and watch them weave baskets, make pottery and take part in daily activities. Let the kids get crafty in art classes. Nearby, the Museum of the Cherokee Indian tells even more stories to illustrate where the Cherokee people came from and what the unique community looks like today.
